Equally admired by jazz fans and drum’n'bass DJs, Charles James Casey and Damian John Hand recorded several of the most diverse EPs for the nominally trip-hop/big-beat Wall of Sound Records. Based in Brixton, the duo debuted in early 1995 with the EP Jazadelica, the third release on Wall of Sound. The EP earned much praise, earning Akasha a spot at 1995’s Glastonbury Festival. There, Casey and Hand unveiled their onstage incarnation, a nine-piece band with several accomplished musicians. In 1998 they released two remix EPs, and a year later the full-length album, Cinematique followed.Akasha is one of those rare groups whose sound transcends genres…a sound which by all rights should have no problems finding an audience. Although it might be classified under downtempo today, Cinematique contains many different styles…but is kept cohesive by one base element: jazz. From the lounge-soaked sound of “Akasha Theme”, to the gorgeous horns and beats of “Crazy Baby”, you can almost taste the jazz textures…as well as a touch of rare groove. There are several samples incorporated into Akasha’s compositions; however, they are perfectly suited to the songs, and do not get in the way of the group’s musical prowess and presence. Cinematique also features a few special guests: Maxi Jazz (Faithless) lends his voice to a couple of tracks, and Neneh Cherry sings on the splendid, unique revisitation of “Sweet Child of Mine”. To this day, I have yet to find a group that performs on this level of sophistication…hopefully, someone will realize that this album must be reissued.Until that time, try to pick this up by any means possible.Akasha is essential listening.

Hello, Iorel, I’ve been through all your work here and I believe it is an almost unbelievable collection of unique albums. I think you are a lucky person to have acces to so much great music, and also very kind for posting it all on your blog for people who have only a record store in their cities with half of tone of mediocre music, like me. This treasure of sounds is something i can really thank you for and like Tuni said, I find myself on a journy through music thanks to you.
I don’t know if you have time for this work and to read people’s coments, but you damn deserve all the thanks you get. So here’s mine: THANK YOU!!!
